Why do dogs poop when they get nervous?

My dog was rescued and is timid. I have trained him and he is definitely housebroken but whenever I take him into an unfamiliar home or building he gets nervouse and poops. I try to take him out before but even if he goes outside he seems be able to do it again when we go into the new place. Any ideas?
