How do I get my SD/MMC reader to read my 2 GB disk without re-formatting the disk?

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 that is nearly 3 years old so it has the old SD MS/Pro MMC SM card reader. I have pics on my 2 GB disk that I want to download so I can't just reformat the disk. Please advise.
