Why does english have too many synonyms?

i've tried blogging and yet the words just don't want to flow out. many times, i'm at a loss for words because i don't know what's the most appropriate [right, correct, proper...?] word to use [for example: astounded, astonished, amazed, stunned, staggered..., or words like smart, intelligent, bright, clever...].
